Chowka Bhara is one of the oldest continuously played board games in the world, with versions of this cross-shaped race game traceable to temple carvings and Sanskrit texts over 1,500 years old. Archaeological evidence from Harappa suggests even older ancestors of this game existed in the Indus Valley Civilization, making its roots potentially 4,000 years deep.

Known by different names across India — Chowkabara and Katte Mane in Kannada, AshtaChamma in Telugu, Daayam in Tamil, Kavidi Kali in Malayalam, and Changa in Hindi — Chowka Bhara is one of the few games that genuinely belongs to all of India, transcending region, language, and era.

Two to four players race their pieces across the cross-shaped board, using authentic Tiger Cowrie shells as dice — one of the oldest randomization methods in human history, predating modern dice by thousands of years.
